About Whit

My experiences might easily fit many cycling fans' definitions of “living the dream.” Since getting hooked on the sport watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship, I've raced as an amateur on Belgian cobbles, traveled Europe to help build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux. As a former assistant director sportif with Mercury-Viatel, I've also seen the less dreamy side of the sport – the side rife with broken contracts, infighting, and positive dope tests. These days, I live with my lovely wife in Pennsylvania and share my experiences and views on the sport at Bicycling Magazine, the Embrocation Cycling Journal, and at my own site, Pavé.

For Linus Gerdemann, the win is but a fleeting reminder of the stage race potential the German once displayed.  Now he’ll likely head to the Tour … Continue reading

2011 Criterium du Dauphiné – Preview

One of my favorite races begins this weekend: the Criterium du Dauphiné. One of two primary build-up races to the Tour de France, this year’s event features a challenging Tour-style parcours (2 time trials and 4 summit finishes) and a start list stocked with riders hoping for glory this July.  Here’s a rundown of … Continue reading

Monday Musette – Memorial Day Edition

Pavé would like to thank Laekhouse for supporting our coverage of the 2011 Giro d’Italia.   Here’s this week’s (Memorial Day) Monday Musette: 1. Julius, one of Pavé’s Contributors, is putting together a more substantial Giro d’Italia Wrap-Up, but let’s take a minute here—at least until we hear otherwise—and give Saxo Bank’s Alberto Contador some … Continue reading

Weekend Preview – Giro, Belgium, and Bayern

Pavé would like to thank Laekhouse for supporting our coverage of the 2011 Giro d’Italia.   Here’s a preview of this weekend’s main events: 1. I wonder if this year’s Giro d’Italia has passed as quickly for the riders as it has for the fans? Regardless, the season’s first grand tour ends this weekend with … Continue reading
