About Whit

My experiences might easily fit many cycling fans' definitions of “living the dream.” Since getting hooked on the sport watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship, I've raced as an amateur on Belgian cobbles, traveled Europe to help build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux. As a former assistant director sportif with Mercury-Viatel, I've also seen the less dreamy side of the sport – the side rife with broken contracts, infighting, and positive dope tests. These days, I live with my lovely wife in Pennsylvania and share my experiences and views on the sport at Bicycling Magazine, the Embrocation Cycling Journal, and at my own site, Pavé.

While everyone’s talking about the pending divorce of Omega Pharma-Lotto, little has been said about the fact that Mr. Tom Boonen’s contract with Quick-Step expires at the end of the 2011 season. Boonen recently announced that he would be riding the Tour and the Vuelta in preparation for a world championship course that suits … Continue reading

Discuss: Is Wiggins a Bust?

I have a confession to make: I’m obsessed with great white sharks. Seriously—one of my lifelong dreams is to hop a plane to South Africa or San Francisco, charter a boat, and see one up close and personal (just ask my wife, she’s tired of hearing about it). I don’t need to touch it, … Continue reading

Here’s the week’s Monday Musette: 1. BMC’s Cadel Evans won his second mid-major stage race of the year yesterday, overcoming a late-start and an eighth-place finish in Saturday’s time trial to win the Tour de Romandie over Astana’s Alexandre Vinokourov and HTC-High Road’s Tony Martin. All three men on the podium used Romandie as … Continue reading

2011 Tour of Romandie – Mid-Race Preview

The 65th edition of the Tour of Romandie began Tuesday, with Euskaltel’s Jonathan Castroviejo taking the race’s first leader’s jersey with a win in the technical 3.5-km Prologue through the streets of Martigny. For years, Romandie was the final piece of the pre-Giro puzzle for anyone hoping to contend for the maglia rosa in … Continue reading
