About Whit

My experiences might easily fit many cycling fans' definitions of “living the dream.” Since getting hooked on the sport watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship, I've raced as an amateur on Belgian cobbles, traveled Europe to help build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux. As a former assistant director sportif with Mercury-Viatel, I've also seen the less dreamy side of the sport – the side rife with broken contracts, infighting, and positive dope tests. These days, I live with my lovely wife in Pennsylvania and share my experiences and views on the sport at Bicycling Magazine, the Embrocation Cycling Journal, and at my own site, Pavé.

Holiday Gift Guide – Laekhouse

If you followed our coverage of this season’s grand tours, you might have tried your hand at winning one of several super cool (yes, I say things like “super cool”) t-shirts from Laekhouse. Designed and screened (by hand) in a Brooklyn apartment, Laekhouse shirts merge iconic cycling images with hipster-endorsed American Apparel t-shirts. Last year … Continue reading

Monday Musette – Il Lombardia Wrap-Up Contest

I have a confession to make: I was unable to watch Saturday’s Il Lombardia as my wife and I picked this weekend to move into our new home. Luckily, I know there are many of you who enjoyed the race as it unfolded. So rather than write a report based upon a race I … Continue reading

Monday Musette – Paris-Tours, Colombia, Pippo’s Return, and Globalization

Here’s this week’s Monday Musette: 1. Yesterday’s Paris-Tours provided an exciting finish to an event that’s proved difficult to predict. But after a season in which he consistently seemed to come-up short in important races (despite impressive rides), BMC’s Greg Van Avermaet took the biggest win of his career in what might have been … Continue reading

Monday Musette – Sprinters, Specialized, & A Funeral

Here’s this week’s (mini) Monday Musette: 1. With next Sunday’s Paris-Tours looming on the horizon, several sprinters used this past weekend to put the finishing touches on their fitness. Radio Shack’s Robbie McEwen won two stages and the overall at the Circuit Franco-Belge (aka, the Tour de Wallone-Picarde), while Skil-Shimano’s Marcel Kittel took his … Continue reading
