About Whit

My experiences might easily fit many cycling fans' definitions of “living the dream.” Since getting hooked on the sport watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship, I've raced as an amateur on Belgian cobbles, traveled Europe to help build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux. As a former assistant director sportif with Mercury-Viatel, I've also seen the less dreamy side of the sport – the side rife with broken contracts, infighting, and positive dope tests. These days, I live with my lovely wife in Pennsylvania and share my experiences and views on the sport at Bicycling Magazine, the Embrocation Cycling Journal, and at my own site, Pavé.

Monday Musette – ENECO, London, & Utah

Here’s this week’s Monday Musette: 1. The big news from this weekend’s ENECO Tour was Edvald Boasson Hagen’s 22-second defeat of Philippe Gilbert. Thor Hushovd to BMC – My (Quick) Two Cents

It has just been announced that Thor Hushovd has signed with BMC for the next three years, an interesting move that has several possible implications. Here are two quick thoughts: 1. How does Thor’s signing affect BMC’s long-rumored acquisition of Philippe Gilbert? While not as expensive as Gilbert, Thor likely didn’t come cheap; one … Continue reading

Weekend Preview – Poland, Denmark, & Spain

This weekend, three of August’s most important stage races wrap-up in Poland, Denmark, and Spain. Here’s a quick run-down what’s going on: 1. Last week, I predicted that Peter Sagan would win two stages and the overall at the Tour of Poland. Until today, the Slovakian Champion looked poised to fulfill that prediction, with two … Continue reading

Monday Mini-Musette – Gilbert, OP-QSI, Kittel, Etc…

  1. In case you missed it, Philippe Gilbert won Saturday’s Clasica San Sebastian with a powerful attack inside the final few kilometers that left his companions—and Rabobank’s Carlos Barredo, who was alone off the front at the time—helpless. Not including his run of post-Tour Criteriums, Gilbert has won 8 of the last 9 races … Continue reading

Weekend Preview – San Sebastian and Poland

The “second half” of the season gets underway this weekend, with Pro Tour races in Spain and Poland. For some, the weekend is the last bit of racing before a well-deserved post-Tour break; for others, it begins the final build-up to the Vuelta a Espana and the autumn classics. Saturday’s Clasica San Sebastian will … Continue reading
